The U. S. Food and Drug Administration is warning men who use prescription erectile dysfunction medication not to drink or use alcohol, particularly those who do not have diabetes.
Consumption of alcohol in excess of what is considered safe to drink is not recommended.
In a recent study published in the journal Urology, scientists found that some men were drinking more than they should and had an increased risk of a heart attack or other heart problems.
However, they found that there was no statistically significant increase in the risk of a heart attack or stroke among those who were using a prescription drug.
The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, looked at nearly 3 million users of Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra. The researchers examined records of users of both drugs, as well as about 10 million men with erectile dysfunction, and found that the use of one of these drugs, Viagra, was associated with an increased risk of a heart attack or stroke.
The researchers found that those who used a prescription drug for erectile dysfunction were more likely to have a heart attack or stroke compared to those who used a nonprescription drug.
“While the study did show an increased risk of a heart attack or stroke, there was no statistically significant increase in the risk of a heart attack or stroke among users of both drugs,” the researchers wrote.
“This is the first study to link prescription erectile dysfunction drugs to an increased risk of a heart attack or stroke. This study suggests that prescription erectile dysfunction drugs may be linked to a risk of a heart attack or stroke, particularly among men who have diabetes.”
Consumers with diabetes should use their health care provider’s recommendation for their medication to be avoided, the FDA said.
“The FDA’s warning was timely given the timely nature of this study and the fact that prescription erectile dysfunction drugs were not available at all.”
The FDA will take action if it determines that a patient has a heart attack or stroke, as well as a heart failure, in the near future.
